Golden Gate Rippers Field Hockey Club is passionate about developing youth and high school field hockey in the North Bay. We are proud to be the first field hockey club in the North Bay. We welcome girls and boys of ALL skill levels, including those new to the sport. Athletes are taught by experienced field hockey coaches and learn specific skills, strategies and teamwork through our practices and tournament play.
Our fall club program is open to grades 5-8. Our spring season and summer camps are open to grades 5-12. We can also help facilitate private or small group skills sessions (please contact us for more details).
USA FIELD HOCKEY MEMBERSHIP REQUIRED FOR ALL PLAYERS
Due to insurance requirements, all players must be members of the USA Field Hockey Association in order to participate in practices and non-USFHA sponsored local tournaments. You must purchase your annual USFHA membership through us for $10 (please pay the additional $10 fee during registration; preferably - add it to your checkout - or via Venmo at the first practice). Memberships last for one year (e.g. if you paid the $10 fee in the fall of 2019, you will not need to pay the fee again until the fall of 2020). Please contact us if you are unsure if you have paid the fee. Note: if your child will be partcipating in a regional tournament or an event sponsored by USFHA tournament, you will have to purchase a full USA Field Hockey Membership directly from the USFHA ($25 for U12 and $60 for U14-U19; please select "Golden Gate Rippers" as your club affiliation). We will let you know whether a tournament or event is sponsored by USFHA in advance.
Waiver Required: All players new to Rippers are required to turn in a USFHA Waiver & Liability Form before you can play (practice or games). Waivers will be filled out electronically during registration. Additional waivers may be required depending on the program.
*If interested in purchasing your own gear, Longstrength has a wide selection of great field hockey sticks and equipment. You can also go to Sling It! in San Rafael to try out sticks in person.
Sessions are rain or shine!
Note: If you can't make all the practice dates (e.g. you've committed to soccer or lacrosse and can only make 3 practices), please email us, and we can give you a promo code. If you're unsure if your child will like field hockey, email us about doing a drop-in practice (even if the season has started). We are more than happy to work with you! No refunds for missed tournaments or practices.
Finally - goalies get a discount of half-price. We love our goalies!!
Due to the lack of field space availability as a result of COVID we will be running a shortened spring season (typically spring season runs from end of January to May). However, we are grateful to have secured field space from April to May. Ironically, because we will not be able to travel for traditional spring tournaments, the number of total practices this spring is almost the same as our typical spring season!
Practice Dates: Sundays, April 11 - May 30 (You can join anytime, even if the season has already started - we can prorate your fee; if you are new to field hockey, you may come to the first practice to see if you enjoy it).
Time: 8:00am - 10:00am (please arrive 15 minutes early for check-in; we start on time)
Location: Ghilotti turf field at Redwood High School
Grades: 5-12 – ALL skill levels
U12 (generally 5th, 6th, and some 7th graders)
U14, U16 & U19 (generally some 7th graders, 8th graders and high school)
*A player's age division is based on his/her age 1/1/2021 (e.g. If a player is 13 years on 1/1/2021, then they will qualify to play in the Under 14 division; if a player is 14 years on 1/1/2021 then they qualify to play in U16).
For practices, we divide the field and split players based on age division and ability. 5th, 6th and some 7th graders (generally U12 and U14 in the spring) practice together, 8th graders and some 7th graders (generally U16 in the spring) practice together, and all high school girls (generally U19) practice together. For tournaments, if you are in 8th grade and are 14 years old, you will have to play in the U16 division; if you are in 8th grade and 13 years old, you will play in the U14 division, unless invited to play up.
